World Book Day
World Book Day takes place on Thursday 7 March 2024 and we are looking forward to celebrating with our school theme of ‘Reading Poetry for Pleasure’. We will be celebrating World Book Day this year at East Borough because we support the charity's mission to change lives through a love of books and reading.
Dressing up or bringing books into school is a big part of World Book Day celebrations and is something that children particularly enjoy. We are inviting children to dress up as a character/item from a favourite poem. Think: owls, pussy cats or pea green boats! Remember that nursery rhymes are poems, and these may be good inspiration for some of our younger children. Please consider home-made costumes – we always love these and you may be able to repurpose old items to save some money. We would ask children to bring in a copy of the poem so that some of these can be shared in class.
In addition to this, we will have plenty of fun activities taking place throughout the week including:
- A visit from poet A F Harrold – this will take place on Friday 1st March 2024, to show children the joy of poetry and build excitement for World Book Day celebrations
- The Masked Poet – videos will be available on the school website of staff reading poems in disguise. We hope children will enjoy watching these and guessing who’s who.
- Undertaking whole school learning based on the poetry anthology ‘Midnight Feasts’. Every class will be exploring the poetry book ‘Midnight Feasts’ by A F Harrold and completing linked English and Art work.
- Poets’ Corner – our Reading Reps will be sharing poems on the playground during breaktimes.
- Write your own Shape Poem competition (see separate details below). Please bring in entries by Wednesday 28th February 2024. Winners will be announced on our World Book Day.
We would also like to invite parents/carers to join their children in class to share our learning and some poems on Thursday 7th March from 2.30pm. Please enter school through the main reception.
Finally, your child will be bringing home a £1 World Book Day token, which can be swapped for a FREE World Book Day book. Simply take your £1 book token to your nearest bookseller and swap it for a World Book Day £1 book OR use it to get £1 off any any book or audiobook costing £2.99 or more. You can find your nearest bookseller at worldbookday.com/participating-retailers
We’re very much looking forward to celebrating World Book Day, which could not happen without the support of parents and carers – thank you.
February Home Learning & World Book Day Competition
We will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 7 March 2024. During that week, the whole school will be reading, writing and performing poetry to co-ordinate with our theme of ‘Reading Poetry for Pleasure’.
For our competition, we would like children to write their own shape poem. Traditionally, this is a poem that describes an object, person or animal and the words of the poem form the shape of the object, person or animal being described.
Children can write their words/poems inside a shape template or draw their own shape. You could even create a 3D poem if arts & craft are your passion! One prize will be given per year group for the best shape poem.
Poems should be handed in to class teachers by Wednesday 28 February 2024.
